National & County Honours 2009

Congratulations to the following pupils for some outstanding sporting achievements this year.

St John's College Sports Curriculum

We support the government recommendation (in accordance with the latest National Curriculum revision) for pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of physical education through each of the following four areas of experience.

Programme of study:

• Health, fitness and well-being activities
• Creative activities
• Adventurous activities
• Competitive activities

Learning across the curriculum

The revised curriculum identifies three areas of learning:

1)  Knowledge and understanding of Wales,
2)  Personal & social development and well-being,
3)  Awareness of the world of work.

Pupils will also be given opportunities to develop and apply the following across the Sports & PE curriculum:

• Thinking
• Communication
• ICT
• Number
• Curriculum Cymreig (7-14) and Wales, Europe and the World (14-19)
• Personal & social education
• Careers and the world of work

Adventurous activities - newly introduced 2009/10!

This year, the Sport & PE department have teamed up with ACE Adventure (teambuilding & adventurous activities organisers), which will be an asset for our pupils to experience tailor made lessons which will fully support the National Curriculum guidelines for the section related to adventurous activities.  For example, pupils will be given an opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques in at least one of the following three types of activities;

• Outdoor and adventurous activities (e.g. climbing, canoeing, orienteering)
• Problem-solving or initiative challenges (e.g. following or designing trails, rope courses)
• Outwardbound activities (e.g. hill walking and camping
)

Our Sporting Ethos

We aim to raise the standards of achievement in physical education and sport for all our students across the ability range leading to whole school improvement.

We believe this can be achieved through clear targets and standards:

• high quality teaching

• high expectations of achievement levels and behaviour

• sound curriculum organisation and planning

• well-defined system of assessment, recording and reporting which is shared with the students

• an extensive extra-curricular programme giving equality of opportunity.

We support the Government’s aspiration for all young people to have two hours high quality P.E. per week within and outside the curriculum. We believe that every pupil at St John's College has an entitlement to a comprehensive grounding in sport. We aim to give pupils the access and opportunity to achieve this. Every student has the prospect to integrate with other students of varying levels of ability and aptitude. Within every sporting activity we endeavour to foster an appreciation of all abilities, achievements, individual contributions and personal experiences that each of the students brings to the learning process in Physical Education.

Sports & Activities

We offer a broad range of sporting activities at St John’s College, emphasising both team and individual sporting prowess, including:

Clubs & Teams

Sporting competition is encouraged at St John's College as a healthy way of allowing pupils to demonstrate their abilities whilst striving to do the best for themselves and for their school.  Each year group has its own teams and every pupil is encouraged to participate in teams and squad training sessions. We compete in both local state school leagues in the mainstream sports as well as playing against other independent schools from all over Wales and England.

Extra-curricular clubs and practices begin at 3.45 and end at 5pm; match times vary. Team sheets are given out prior to matches with exact times for parents to organise pick up times.

Every week a timetable of extra curricular events is displayed on the Sports webpage (see above) and on the P.E. Notice Board giving notice to pupils and parents of the sporting activities planned for the week ahead.

At St John's College, pupils are provided with the highest standard of sporting equipment and facilities and are expected to play to the best of their abilities. The school fosters an ethos of fair play both within sports practices and amongst teams and individuals representing the school in competitive external fixtures.

Meet the Department

The St John’s Sport & PE Department boasts six UWIC trained Sport & PE Staff as well as three Play Ball Specialists who work along side them.  Members of the department have specialisms within their own fields of sport & coaching (netball, football, rugby, gymnastics, trampolining, athletics & cricket) as well as other subject areas.  The department is in regular contact with sports coaches from Cardiff Sports Development, who deliver coaching sessions in a wide variety of sports (for example, Welsh volleyball, Cardiff Blues & Welsh Squash academy coaches).

Facilities

St John's College boasts a newly built multi-purpose sports hall comprising a netball court, four badminton / short tennis courts, a full size basketball court with retractable goals, two junior basketball courts, 2 trampolines with summersault rig and a five-a-side football court; we also have an outdoor netball court.

Our extensive sports grounds in nearby Began Road include a full size football, rugby, and cricket pitches with an artificial all-weather wicket. We also have plans to incorporate athletics equipment and a pavillion into the grounds in the near future.

Annual Events

Every year we have both a junior and senior sports day held at the National Indoor Arena at University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). All pupils compete for points for their House (be it Bute, St David's, Mostyn or De la Salle) in their preferred events and at levels appropriate to the abilities of each pupil.

Swimming is an essential part of the junior curriculum, and at the end of the swimming term in February we hold a swimming gala at Pentwyn Leisure Centre where pupils compete for house points.

Both of these events are well supported by pupils and parents and are great fun for those involved.

Sainsbury’s Active

St John's College is part of the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Scheme which was established to give young people the opportunity to try new and fun activities whilst learning life skills and a healthy active lifestyle. The wider community, parents, staff and pupils of St John’s College are all involved in supporting the scheme.

Dame Kelly Holmes is a great rôle model who began promoting Sainsbury’s Active Kids with the main purpose of promoting competition, being active and healthy whilst using good quality and safe equipment.  Sainsbury’s Vouchers can be obtained from any Sainsbury’s store and deposited in school.  At the end of the summer term the vouchers are exchanged for new Equipment.

This scheme has enabled us to introduce brand new sports to our curriculum, such as handballActive Kids vouchers have contributed to the purchase of all the necessary hardware
for handball, which has proved to be highly popular this year.
