R16 Team Wins Rotary Youth Speaks Competition

Many congratulations to our teams from R16 who competed in Thursday night’s Rotary Youth Speaks Competition at Howell’s School, Llandaff.

Team 1 consisted of Ryan M (Chair), Dominie P (Speaker) and Bethan T (Vote of Thanks), while Team 2 comprised Gwyn P (Chair), Tom M (Speaker) and Aditya N (Vote of Thanks).  By coincidence our speakers both chose the topic of free speech.

Dominie: ‘Freedom of speech is an absolute, inviolable right’.

Tom: ‘It is sometimes justified for the government to restrict freedom of speech’.

The standard of public speaking was very high indeed.  Our speakers balanced gravity of speech content with wit and highly persuasive argument.  Despite competing against older teams of sixth formers from Llandaff Cathedral School and Howell’s School, Llandaff, our R16 team was awarded first prize.  Ryan, Dominie and Bethan (Team 1) now progress to the regional final on 17 February.

Added to the sixth formers’ victory in the Cambridge Union Debating Competition last month, this has been an exceptional period of success for public speaking and debating at St John’s College.  Congratulations to everyone involved.

Mr J. Neville.
