L6 Gold CREST Engineering Award 2018-19
The Engineering Education Scheme is an initiative that brings together schools and industrial companies so that ‘would be engineers’, or students that wish to sample this avenue of employment, can work on substantial projects, whilst receiving support from a working engineer.
Teams of four to eight students, usually from L6, work with engineers on the completion of the whole project from ‘brief’ to report. Successful teams are honoured with a Gold CREST Award which, in industry and Higher Education, carries similar prestige to The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.
This year’s project required the students to design an exhibit for Techniquest that explains what compound semi-conductors and photonics are to teenagers.
The team presented their ideas to the board of directors for Newport Wafer Fab and Techniquest on Wednesday 13th March.
They recently received exciting news that their main idea, along with two others have been selected for full costing and board selection. Their innovative designs could well be viewed in Techniquest in the near future – what an achievement!
Congratulations to all students involved, you should be very proud of what you’ve learnt and achieved throughout this journey.
