On April 4th, Techniquest visited the Junior School to inform our pupils about Material Magic. Viscous liquids and Non-Newtonian fluids were among the many demonstrations given by Mr Techniquest, ably aided by our pupils.
Electricity was seen to flow through humans; shadows were captured using UV light and zinc sulfide; plates changed colour due to thermochromic chemicals; and possibly the favourite, a piece of wire which had a mind all of its own. This was nitinol, a material with a shape memory. On the application of heat from a hairdryer, this unassuming piece of straight wire twisted and turned slowly to form the word “HOT”.
The magic of Science and the science of Magic were enjoyed by all.
