Junior Book Club

Nim’s Island Book Club

The nail-biting adventure of Wendy Orr’s plucky heroine and her animal friends, Fred the Iguana and Chica the Sea Lion, enchanted our younger Junior Book Club members. They were swept along as our heroes saved loved ones from danger and protected their idyllic tropical island home from litter, plastic and mass tourism!

All did well, though it was St David’s 1 who emerged the eventual winners, finishing up with an impressive high score!

Lionboy Junior Book Club

Zizou Corder’s Lionboy took Junior Book Club members on an adventure across Europe with the cat speaking Charlie Ashanti and a pride of lions. The setting, a near future where fossil fuels have run out, provoked a topical discussion on climate change. Congratulations to St David’s 2 for the narrowest of victories in a keenly contested Book Club quiz.

Next Junior Book Club

The last Book Club of the academic year will be a ‘magical’ one. Members are invited to choose between the following texts and attend the quiz, in Forest School (weather permitting), dressed as witches and wizards. (No wands please).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J K Rowling (aimed at older readers)

or

A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch by Jill Murphy (suitable for all)

The Sunday Times describes Harry Potter as, “One of the greatest literary adventures of modern times.”

The Sunday Express says, “Millions of young readers have fallen under the spell of Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch.”

The next Junior Book Club will be held, in Period 4, on Tuesday 25th June. As always, those who have read the text, had it read to them or have listened to the audiobook are welcome to attend.

 Happy reading,

Mrs J Cooney & Mr R Dennis
