Welsh Department Trip
On Thursday 20th February, the pupils studying the Welsh A level course visited the Sherman Theatre along with their teachers to watch Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s (Welsh language branch of the Welsh National Theatre) production of Blodeuwedd.
The story Blodeuwedd comes from the fourth branch of the Mabinogi. Saunders Lewis created a classic verse play with his unique interpretation of the old story. Completing the work soon after the Second World War, Lewis reminds us that nature is a dangerous weapon in the hands of man.
This interpretation of the play is actually set during the Second World War although Saunders Lewis wrote it for Medieval dress. The language used was very difficult for learners to understand. It is very poetic and similar in style to Shakespeare’s work. But the students showed real interest and asked appropriate questions. It was a really good example of Welsh Theatre with many well-known Welsh actors and personalities attending.
We were very proud of the pupils.
Da iawn ferched.
