Christmas Book Club
Our Christmas wishes were granted this year as we were absolutely delighted to see every single child in the Junior school take part in our festive Book Club based on Charles Dickens classic yuletide tale, ‘A Christmas Carol’! The children had a number of editions of the story to choose from, ranging in complexity, meaning our very youngest pupils could compete on the same teams alongside our oldest – quite a novel experience for them!
It was two firsts for us as the unprecedented numbers meant a new format had to be found – Junior Book Club has gone digital for the first time! The children were split up into their house groups to compete against each other using the computer quiz Kahoot. The team with the highest score overall scooped a victory for their house. In a truly exceptional display of festive finesse, Bute 1 came top of all twenty competing teams, with De La Salle 4 and St Davids 3 close behind in second and third respectively.
Next Junior Book Club
The next Junior Book Club texts are both based on the theme of ‘Fear of the Dark’:
The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau (a fast-paced science fiction adventure aimed at older readers)
The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomlinson (suitable for all)
Jan Mark wrote in TES that ‘DuPrau is a most engaging writer: direct, succinct, delivering lively characters and genuine suspense, sustaining the mystery but generous with her clues’
The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark elicited the following review in Publishers Weekly. ‘As for the round, plump and utterly fetching Plop himself, he’s an irresistible ball of fluff who may well convert a host of readers to nighttime’s appeal.’
The next Junior Book Clubs will be held on Wednesday, 7th March in Period 7.
All those who have read a text, had it read to them or have listened to the audiobook are welcome to attend.
