Cathedral Choir Tour to Madrid

Cathedral Choir at El Escorial, Spain - October 2014

The Senior and Sixth Form Choral Scholars have just returned from a most enjoyable tour to Madrid and El Escorial. Particular highlights were a superb concert at Iglesia de San Manuel y San Benito (with two standing ovations), visits to Prado Art Gallery, Parque Retiro, and Real Madrid’s Bernabéu Stadium, and performances at Madrid Cathedral and the world-famous El Escorial.

Daniela Mizzen (U6th Choral Scholar):

‘I was very lucky to experience singing with the choir in the centre of Madrid in churches such as the San Iglesias, Retiro. I was amazed by the height of the church dome and its incredible acoustic. After singing the first note of Tallis’ ‘Te Lucis Ante Terminum’ I was in awe of the six second echo that followed and this was definitely one of the best moments of the trip for me. We also walked through the beautiful parks that are in the centre and the surrounding areas of the capital. This gave my friends and I a chance to relax and chat after a very busy start to the school term. Overall I had an amazing time on tour to Madrid with the choir and it was a great last trip abroad to end the many that I have experienced over the past 10 years since joining the choir.’

Matthew Barbato (U6th Choral Scholar):

‘On the second day, we visited the picturesque San Lorenzo de El Escorial in the outskirts of Madrid. The Basilica itself was vast and full of grandeur, with prominent Italian artwork of painters such as Titian and Bosch decorating many of the walls. The acoustic in the Basilica was breathtaking and further enhanced the magnificent performance at midday. Following the concert, we were treated to some homegrown tangerines from the clergy at El Escorial before quickly departing for our flight back to Cardiff.’

In the year ahead, the choir will perform its annual Christmas and Easter lunchtime concerts at St David’s Hall Cardiff on Tuesday 25 November and Tuesday 17 March and the Choir will also be performing at Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
