L6th Speak at Parliament Week, Westminster
On Monday a team of seven L6th students travelled to The Houses of Parliament to deliver a presentation on their idea for an App to address the problem of youth disengagement in politics. Upon arrival we had a short walk around Westminster Abbey and The Houses of Parliament before commencing the day’s proceedings in The Attlee Suite, Portcullis House. Our pupils were honoured to be the only Welsh team and 1 of only 14 teams from across the UK to progress to the final of Hardcopy or #Hashtag?: Young People’s Vision for a Digital Parliament, which saw teams travel from as far away as Belfast and Glasgow.
Following scrutiny of each of the team’s posters and summary proposals at an exhibition, it was time for each of the teams to offer a Dragons’-Den-style pitch, lasting only one minute. Our presenters, Parinita and Ryan, were commended by the panel for a very well-conceived proposal and offered robust and eloquent responses to questions from the floor. They achieved a creditable second place to the overall winners, ‘Vloggers’, of Oakwood School, Kent. Our students were enthused by the experience and offered some impressive contributions to the debate hosted by the actor and director, Femi Oyeniran. Especially inspiring was the opportunity to express their views and ideas at the very centre of British democracy.
