Junior Book Club

The magic of C S Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe appears to have enchanted another generation of children, 65 years on. Book Club members were passionate about this text and were keen to discuss and answer quiz questions on it. Congratulations to all who took part, especially to the Bute and De La Salle teams, the joint winners of the unabridged text quiz and to the St David’s team for winning the abridged text quiz.

The next Book Club books are also timeless and magical classics, both written by award winning authors: Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce (aimed at older readers) or Charlotte’s Web by E B White (suitable for all).

Tom’s Midnight Garden was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1958 and Philippa Pearce was subsequently awarded an OBE for services to Children’s Literature.  The Independent described Tom’s Midnight Garden as a ‘masterpiece of English children’s literature.’

E. B. White received many awards including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1970, an award to authors who have ‘made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.’  The Daily Mail said of Charlotte’s Web, ‘No child should be without a copy.’

The next Junior Book Club will be held, in Circle Time, on Tuesday 10th March. As always, those who have read the text, had it read to them or have listened to the audio book are welcome to attend.

Happy reading,

Mrs J Cooney & Mrs D Criddle.
