Service of Confirmation at St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral
Nine St John’s College students of R13 celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation which was conferred by His Grace, Archbishop George Stack at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Sunday 17 May. The students have been receiving instruction at school for the past twelve weeks which culminated in a day retreat at the parish of St David Lewis, Usk. The day was led by Fr Bernard Sixtus (the parish priest) who gave a talk on reconciliation and introduced the students to the art of lectio divina. This was followed by a period of exposition during which each of the candidates went to Confession. This concluded with Benediction and a talk by Mr Morgan on the life of St David Lewis. After a short break, the students set off on a mini-pilgrimage through the town visiting the site of St David Lewis’ martyrdom before paying their respects at his grave at the Priory Church. The students then all enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Three Salmons Hotel to conclude the day of retreat.
On Sunday, the service of Confirmation was exceptionally well-attended and the liturgy was enhanced by the Cathedral Choir’s performances of the glorious Renaissance motets, Dum Complerentur by Palestrina and Ascendit Deus by Peter Philips.
