On Tuesday, St John’s competed for the first time in the Cardiff Regional Table Tennis Tournament held at Cardiff City Table Tennis Club. A strong squad was selected to enter two separate competitions (R12 and R13/14 combined).
The St John’s pupils dominated throughout the tournament with most teams winning all of their games. St John’s B (Oskar G and Ben P) team won the R12 tournament and the A team (Tom KB and Aviral B) won the R13/14 tournament. A special mention must go to the two R11 pupils in the tournament, Jack P and Conrad S, who were playing in the tournament a year early and still achieved a 3rd place finish. Well done to all involved.
On Thursday, the R15 rugby team played in the second round of the Cardiff Plate knockout competition. We travelled away to Bro Edern who are always fantastic opposition. The team got off to a nervous start with Bro Edern camped on the St John’s try line for the first 15 minutes. Eventually the St John’s defence gave in and Bro Edern took a 7-0 lead. St John’s struck back immediately after an excellent individual effort from Alex C led to a Luke M try. Otis S was unlucky to miss the conversion 7-5. The second half was away and Bro Edern attacked from the offset scoring a well worked try. St John’s dug deep throughout with some outstanding defensive work from captain Lloyd F who stopped a certain try with a last ditch tackle. Eventually Bro Edern scored, taking the game to 12-5.
St John’s showed immense character to keep playing even though the defeat seemed inevitable. Out of nothing James L picked up the ball from the base of a ruck on his own try line and marched down the field leaving numerous Bro Edern defenders behind. An outstanding individual try. Otis S kicked the conversion with ease – 12-12. With a minute left on the clock the Bro Edern players were camped on our try line and eventually St John’s gave away a penalty at the ruck. Bro Edern signalled for the posts which would take the game away from St John’s. The kick was successful, final score: 15-12. The St John’s R15 rugby team can be very proud of what they have already achieved this year. Well done to all involved, you have done the school and yourselves very proud.
Congratulations to the St John’s College Senior Boys Tennis Team, Callum F, Saif A, Edward W and Suyash A. On Tuesday afternoon the boys were involved in a thrilling fixture with Whitchurch High which ended up going the full distance with St John’s winning the shootout.

Ten girls from R13/12 competed in the Urdd National Netball Tournament at NIAC. We started off with a rough start and lost to Llanharri A. We came off disappointed but then we went on to play a good game against Glan y mor, just losing by one goal. So the girls went into game 3 with confidence but still no luck. The girls headed into game five with hope when Charlotte scored our first goal of the tournament followed by 2 goals scored by Maddy, giving us a 3-1 victory against Caldicot. We left the tournament on a high note. Well done girls.

Congratulations to all players who were selected to play in the National Urdd Netball Tournament – a fantastic opportunity to play schools from across Wales. The girls displayed excellent teamwork throughout the day and were excellent representatives of St John’s College. Well done to Charlotte who received player of the tournament from her peers.
