Team Vortex_ Wins Research and Development Award at F1 in Schools National Final
Over the last two days at Silverstone race circuit, Team Vortex_ competed with 29 other F1 in schools teams at the National Final.
The competition was fierce with the chance to compete at the World finals for the top three teams.
All teams were expected to perform in a variety of different tasks, made even more tense by the realisation that they were being scrutinised by a team of judges from World finals.
Vortex_ had a mixed first day, their pit went up without issue, their verbal presentation went well and the car was looking great and they met Ben Collins (The Stig). However, an issue with their “LERS” (launch energy recovery system) and the car being slightly too heavy, saw them just outside the top ten in time trials at the end of the first day. Thursday morning, the team headed to the track with a sense of dread, “What if they had broken a critical rule?”. As the list of teams were posted, Vortex_ breathed a sigh of relief. They were not required by the judges and could be sure of a good set of marks going into knockouts.
Knockouts arrived and with Rowan on the trigger surely we could get through to quarters … this was not the case and a DNS (Did not start) with the fastest car meant we only had one chance to shine and our opposing team Technically Viral managed to achieve the faster time.
Vortex_ assumed that all was lost and the chance of a trophy during the presentation was a very long shot. The awards for Design & Engineering were announced and Vortex_ were in the top three. Next came Design and Innovation and despite not being in the shortlist Vortex_ brought the trophy home – it made all the hard work worthwhile and an indication that the team had made further progress.
The DT department would like to congratulate Team Vortex_ for all their hard work and dedication to F1 in schools. We are incredibly proud of all that you have achieved!
We would also like to thank all the families of the team for their tireless support, the Sponsors that allowed the boys to progress, to STEM Cymru, to Wynne Evans at BBC Radio Wales and to all staff at the school for their continued support and enthusiasm.
WELL DONE TEAM VORTEX_
