R10 – Kensuke’s Kingdom Trip Report
R10s travelled to Oxwich Bay on the Gower Peninsular to learn all about survival skills. Pupils are reading Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ where the main character, a young boy called Michael, ends up shipwrecked on an island.
To begin pupils sat alone on the beach to contemplate the fate of being shipwrecked before climbing the highest sand dune to survey the resources available to them. Next, pupils learnt the order of importance for shelter, water and food before constructing their own shelters on the beach in groups. Group working and communication skills were pushed to the limit as varying levels of success were achieved as the pupils battled with the wind.
To finish the day pupils constructed their own water stills and learnt from how to scout for food. Even the rain for the last hour could not dampen the pupils’ enthusiasm and spirit as they thoroughly enjoyed their day out in the wonderful Welsh weather. A really great day was had by all accompanied by sand everywhere!
