Precious and the Zebra Necklace Book Club

Our younger Book Club members became private detectives in the wilds of Botswana in our first Book Club of the year – Precious and the Zebra Necklace by Alexander McCall Smith.
Featuring the young Precious Remotswe from the authors globally best-selling No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency tackling one of her very first cases, the children were thrilled by this exotic, warm-hearted and brilliantly illustrated adventure.
Bute 1 showed superior sleuthing on this occasion narrowly coming out on top, however, all did well in an impressively close and enthusiastically contested quiz.
Well done all!
Mr R Dennis

There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom
Book Club members expressed great empathy and affection for the characters in this quirky text by Louis Sachar. The central character’s journey of discovery provoked a thoughtful discussion about friendship, growing up and learning to think independently. Congratulations to quiz winners, St David’s 2.

Next Book Club

The next Book Club texts are considered to be modern classics. Pupils can choose between:
Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson (aimed at older readers)
or
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes (suitable for all)
Journey to the River Sea has been described as,
The most perfect children’s book…captivatingly told, funny and moving. (Sunday Times)
Enchanting and inspiring. Any reader presented with this book will be enriched for life. (Anne Fine, Children’s Laureate 2001-2003)
Reviews for The Iron Man include:
A visionary tale, telling and troubling, poetic and powerful. (Michael Morpurgo)
Reckoned one of the greatest modern fairy tales. (Observer)
Gripping…a classic. (Philip Pullman)

The next Junior Book Club will be held during Period 4, on Monday 12th November. As always, those who have read the text, had it read to them or have listened to the audiobook are welcome to attend.
Happy reading,
Mrs J Cooney &  Mr R Dennis
