Success at AEGON LTA Tennis Tournament, Bath University
Joe W (R13), Callum F (R14), Kai B (R15) and Owen J (R16) started this tennis competition in April and had played at least 7 matches just to get to this tournament. We were already Welsh Champions and therefore had done extremely well to get to this stage. We left school at 7.15am to get the Bath in time for our semi-final encounter with QEH Bristol at 9.30am. All four boys put on a very good display but unfortunately we lost the match 6-0 in sets. However, the score does not reflect each set as they were close. The tennis on display was a pleasure to see and even the opponents’ teacher commented on actually how close this match was. Unfortunately, this loss meant we could not make it to the last 4 in the UK. However, we then had a 3/4th place play-off to determine whether we came 3rd or 4th in the South West competition and effectively 9th or 13th in the UK. The match was against St Peter’s (Bournmouth) who had lost heavily against an outstanding Millfield outfit in their earlier semi-final. This match was of great quality and St John’s ran out 5-1 winners! Every player won their singles matches and Kai B and Owen J collaborated well to win their doubles. Unfortunately, Callum F and Joe W lost the battle in their doubles match but it did not matter as St John’s College had secured out best ever finish in this tournament by far.
A special mention must go to Robbie G (R16) who played in the first four matches of the competition and helped us get to this particular tournament. A place in the last 4 in the UK at Bolton Arena unfortunately did not happen for us but to finish 1st in Wales, 3rd in the South West and 9th in the UK is an outstanding achievement for all the pupils involved. Congratulations for your effort, commitment and enthusiasm in getting so far in the competition. We as a PE department and school are extremely proud of our school competing in sport with the likes of St Peter’s and Millfield! Well done!
