  • Orchestral & Choral Music Collaboration Day

    On Thursday 22 October, our Music Department welcomed pupils from across Cardiff to join our pupils in an orchestral and choral music collaboration day.  The afternoon’s performances featured the Concert Orchestra, Cathedral Choir, Training Orchestra and Junior Girls’ Choir.  The Concert Orchestra performed Walton’s Crown Imperial and Elgar’s Chanson de Matin and members of the orchestra gave lively demonstrations of instruments to introduce the pupils to the orchestra.  …

  • R14 & R15 Music Trip to BBC ‘Ten Pieces’

    Thirty-three Music GCSE pupils from R14 and R15 were chosen by the BBC to attend the Welsh Premiere screening of their ‘Ten Pieces’ programme of classical music for secondary schools. There were dramatic extracts from Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, R. Vaughan Williams’ exquisite Lark Ascending with Nicola Benedetti and Haydn’s vital Trumpet Concerto with Alison Balsam; we also heard Bizet’s eternal melodies from Carmen and Bach’s brilliant Toccata and Fugue in D minor played by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra based in Salford, Manchester.…

  • R15 Music Trip to BBC Cardiff Singer of the World

    On Thursday 18 June, the R15 Music class had the privilege of attending the coveted final round of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World at St David’s Hall.  The boys and girls were captivated by the variety of repertoire and amazing talent on display and will look forward to watching coverage of last night’s competition on BBC4 this evening before the highly anticipated grand final on Sunday.…

  • R12 Gamelan Music Trip – St David’s Hall

    All three classes in R12 visited St David’s Hall this week to take part in a Gamelan workshop. The session introduced pupils to the music of Java and they were able to play a variety of elaborate instruments made of bronze with traditional hand finished woodcarvings. Pupils were actively involved throughout the workshop and enjoyed group music-making.…

  • Service of Confirmation at St David’s Metropolitan Cathedral

    Nine St John’s College students of R13 celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation which was conferred by His Grace, Archbishop George Stack at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Sunday 17 May.  The students have been receiving instruction at school for the past twelve weeks which culminated in a day retreat at the parish of St David Lewis, Usk.  …

    On Wednesday 4 March, our boy and girl choristers attended the annual Choir Schools Association Sports and Evensong Day, this year generously hosted by Hereford Cathedral.   In the Netball Tournament, our girl choristers battled valiantly to come third, while in the hotly contested Football Tournament, our boy choristers were crowned overall winners, seeing off competition from the Cathedrals of Bristol, Exeter, Gloucester, Hereford, Llandaff, Truro, Wells, Winchester and Tewkesbury Abbey.…

    On Tuesday 30 September, our Cathedral Choir had the privilege of providing the music for the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference service of evening prayer at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Our Archbishop of Cardiff presided with Canon Collins (Dean of the Cathedral), and the Anglican Bishop of Worcester gave the sermon.  The lesson was read by the Head of Eton College, and we were joined by the Chamber Choir of Uppingham School in magnificent performances of works by Orlando Gibbons, Charles Wood and Dr David Neville.…
