    On Wednesday morning, forty-nine R12 pupils departed St John’s for an exciting three days at Llangrannog. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the activities including skiing, tobogganing, bingo, quads, high ropes, trampolining, horse riding and the eagerly awaited disco! They immersed themselves in the Welsh language and got to know one another that little bit better by developing their teamwork and communicating skills.…

    Many congratulations to our pupils Ji-Eun K, Luke V and Harshita A who took part in the Junior Maths Challenge. Luke V achieved a gold certificate along with Best in Class, Best in Year and Best in School. This wonderful achievement meant that Luke was the only pupil in R13 that was invited to sit the follow-up ‘Kangaroo’ paper, which is a far more mathematically rigorous challenge.…

Pupils performed either ‘Romeo and Juliet’ or ‘Henry V’ to follow on from their Literature studies of the plays this term.   • R16 History Trip to the American Museum, Bath

    R16 pupils travelled to Bath for a highly informative trip to The American Museum.  The students saw exhibits on the history of slavery in America and related this to their study of the Jim Crow Laws and discrimination towards black people in 20th century America. After we had watched a fascinating film on The Civil Rights Movement, the students were invited to use their research and analysis skills to work in groups on a wide variety of source material, including government papers, witness testimony, newspapers and photographs on the topics of Black Power, the 1963 Birmingham March, the Freedom Rides and education.…

    On Thursday night, two teams of public speakers from St John’s College took part in the Rotary Youth Speaks Senior Competition hosted by Llanishen High School.  A total of sixth teams were involved from Howell’s School, Llanishen High and St John’s College. The R16 team, comprising Alif (Chairperson), Rowan (Speaker) and Idris (Proposer of the Vote of Thanks), spoke convincingly on the benefits of veganism and offered their best performance to date.  …

  • New Design & Technology Workshop

    Sixth Form Design Technology students have enjoyed using the new workshop making wooden boxes using a range of hand tools and new machinery. The students have been taught about the properties of hardwoods and the range of skills required to make an ornamental wooden box.     Today our whole school worked together to raise money for Children in Need. The Infants wore their ‘Silly Socks’ and the Juniors and Seniors wore spotty socks and Pudsey ears alongside our usual money raising cake sale. There was an exciting repertoire of literature read, with most of the pupils exceeding the minimum requirement of three books.     Readathon is an event that helps three charities for seriously ill children: CLIC Sargent, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and Together for Short Lives.     On Thursday 22 October, our Music Department welcomed pupils from across Cardiff to join our pupils in an orchestral and choral music collaboration day.  The afternoon’s performances featured the Concert Orchestra, Cathedral Choir, Training Orchestra and Junior Girls’ Choir.  The Concert Orchestra performed Walton’s Crown Imperial and Elgar’s Chanson de Matin and members of the orchestra gave lively demonstrations of instruments to introduce the pupils to the orchestra.  …

    R13 Geography classes very much enjoyed their visit to Caswell Bay on the Mumbles where the sun shone all day. The pupils investigated how the bay had been, and continues to be, subjected to the power of the waves. They sketched the coastal features including headlands, faults, caves and arches. In groups they made sand sculptures to represent the processes of erosion and later they timed waves to help them to decide if they were destructive or constructive waves.…

    Thirty-three Music GCSE pupils from R14 and R15 were chosen by the BBC to attend the Welsh Premiere screening of their ‘Ten Pieces’ programme of classical music for secondary schools. There were dramatic extracts from Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, R. Vaughan Williams’ exquisite Lark Ascending with Nicola Benedetti and Haydn’s vital Trumpet Concerto with Alison Balsam; we also heard Bizet’s eternal melodies from Carmen and Bach’s brilliant Toccata and Fugue in D minor played by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra based in Salford, Manchester.…

    On Tuesday 29 September, our R16 Geography students went on a trip to Abergavenny in preparation for their controlled assessment. We visited both Abergavenny town centre and a residential area to the south of the town in order to investigate how the CBD and suburbs of Abergavenny differ. The students mapped land use, undertook pedestrian counts and completed environmental quality surveys, as well as undertaking their own individual data collection.…
