    Week Beginning 26th June 2017 Swimming News On Friday, eleven pupils from R10/11 represented St John’s College in the Sport Cardiff Swimming Gala Finals at the Cardiff International Pool. All pupils competed in the individual races which included 25 Front Crawl, 25m Backstroke and 25m Breaststroke. Nadia competed in the 25m Front Crawl final, Sam and Lucas competed in the 25m Breaststroke final and a huge congratulations to Harry who gained a bronze medal in the boys 25m Front Crawl final.…

    Steven Zihan has achieved a gold award in the recent Chemistry Olympiad held here last term (only 7.8% of students achieved this award nationally this year). Sara Jane and Nila Jambulingham gained silver awards (25.5 nationally) and Ahmed Kambal achieved bronze (30% nationally). The Infants wore their ‘Silly Socks’ and the Juniors and Seniors wore spotty socks and Pudsey ears alongside our usual money raising cake sale.     AS Biology students attended a half day workshop in the laboratories at Techniquest on Thurs 17th November, accompanied by Mrs L Thomas and Mrs Gordon-Smith. They had to extract their own mitochondrial DNA from cheek cells – not painful at all! As this DNA is maternal, there is no danger of these samples ever being used as a DNA profile.…

    On Saturday 23 January, eight sixth formers competed in the Cambridge Schools’ Debating Competition hosted by Howell’s School. Thirty-two teams from twelve schools in South Wales and the South West of England took part in three debates from 12-7pm – a long day for all involved!  The students were given only fifteen minutes to prepare for each motion, with topics ranging from whether judges should be elected, whether graduates should be required to remain in developing countries and whether bystanders should have legal obligation to intervene to protect victims of crime.…

    On Friday 5th December the Art & Design A level group travelled to the National Museum of Wales and the Martin Tinney Gallery Cardiff. The students were able to see a range of contemporary Welsh artists as well as the fantastic historical, Impressionist and modern collections.   • Sixth Form DNA Workshop at Techniquest

    Lower Sixth Biology students attended a half day workshop in the laboratories at Techniquest on DNA.  They had to extract their own DNA from cheek cells (not painful at all!).  These samples were then subjected to amplification on a PCR machine and analysed by the students using electrophoresis. This was an immensely informative experience for our students and offered an opportunity to work in a professional laboratory.…

    On Thursday 6th November, 62 of our sixth form maths students participated in this year’s SMC. This challenge is run by UKMT; it is difficult and is a real challenge. This involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes. The questions are of graded difficulty and marks are deducted for incorrect answers.…

    On Tuesday 30 September, our Cathedral Choir had the privilege of providing the music for the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference service of evening prayer at the Metropolitan Cathedral.     ‘After we had arrived in Poland, we travelled to the town of Oswiecim, where we walked around the nearby Jewish cemetery (The town of Oswiecim was renamed ‘Auschwitz’ by the Nazis when they invaded Poland). We first visited Auschwitz I, the camp which was mainly used to house non-Jewish prisoners, before travelling to Auschwitz Birkenau, the death camp used to exterminate the Jews or ‘gypsy’ prisoners.…
