  • Morgan Foley Wins Award for 600/600 in A-Level Further Mathematics

    Warm congratulations to recent St John’s College alumnus, Morgan Foley, who has been recognised as having achieved the highest number of points for WJEC A-Level Further Mathematics (600/600 – full marks) from the summer 2014 cohort across England and Wales. Morgan, who is currently studying Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, was invited to celebrate this admirable achievement at the WJEC annual A-Level Awards in December.  …

    On Wednesday 17 December, the whole school gathered for its annual Christmas Assembly.   The Concert Orchestra and Sixth Form Ensemble performed a selection of Christmas music and led the congregational carols.   • Junior Department Trip to see the ‘Arabian Nights’

    On Wednesday, 17th December, the entire Junior Department visited the Sherman Theatre to see a splendid production of the ‘Arabian Nights’. Pupils were enthralled by the different stories told by Sheherazade each night to her husband in order to delay her execution. As Kiki Farrell (R8) said, “It’s a story with lots of stories inside it.” Pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the production and it was a great end to the term.…

  • Training Orchestra Christmas Trip to Peter & the Wolf

    On Thursday 11th December 29 junior and senior pupils from the Training Orchestra enjoyed a performance of Peter and the Wolf at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. It was a wonderful experience to see and hear the instruments at close quarters and was further enhanced by the enchanting use of both full-sized puppets and shadow puppetry.  …

    On Friday 12 December, the school hosted its annual Awards Ceremony & Christmas Concert.  It was a wonderful opportunity for staff, pupils and parents to celebrate the achievements of R16, L6th and U6th students, as well as former sixth formers who have begun their university studies this year.     During Thursday lunchtime, our three sixth form Young Enterprise teams hosted a Christmas Fair in the foyer of the new Sixth Form Building.  Team Helix focused on the market for winter clothing, selling hand warmers, hats and gloves, Apollo X sold iPad and iPhone accessories, while Prism ventured into the traditional Christmas gift arena.  …

    On Wednesday 10 December, our U6th historians enjoyed an informative study morning at the University of South Wales, Pontypridd.  Top academics led seminars on historical research skills to assist the students with their HY3 coursework projects as well as an interactive class on the 1930s policy of Appeasement, which features in their 1880-1980 British Foreign Policy studies.  …

    On Monday afternoon, three R16 pupils took part in the ESU Churchill National Public Speaking Competition at Bishop of Llandaff High School.  Queena L was the Chairperson, Michael L was the Speaker and Nila J was the Questioner.  Michael’s topic was ‘Ideology is extinct in British politics’.  The judges gave positive and constructive comments about the St John’s team.…

  • Art & Design Visit to The National Museum of Wales & Martin Tinney Gallery

    On Friday 5th December the Art & Design A level group travelled to the National Museum of Wales and the Martin Tinney Gallery Cardiff. The students were able to see a range of contemporary Welsh artists as well as the fantastic historical, Impressionist and modern collections.   • Primary Maths Challenge

    In November, some of our R10 and R11 pupils took parts in the Primary Maths Challenge, run by the Mathematical Association.  As the title implies, the questions are very challenging and I am always impressed by how the pupils apply their skills to these problem solving questions.  I would like to say well done to all those who took part and congratulations to Harshita (R10), Kavin (R11), Ella E (R11) and Akash K (R11) who were awarded the Bronze certificate; Crina (R10), Ayush (R11) and Arnav (R11) who were awarded the Silver certificate and a huge well done to Srinetra our Gold certificate winner.…
