  • R10 Visit to Tredegar House

    At the end of March, R10 pupils enjoyed stepping back in time to the Victorian era as they spent a day at the impressive Tredegar House. Pupils have been studying day to day life and the differences in social class during this historical era and thoroughly embraced the day. Dressed as Victorian children, pupils had a tour of the house and learned all about the Morgans of Tredegar and their influential role in the development of industry and commerce in South Wales, particularly within the city of Newport.…

  • Nursery Easter Activities

    The Nursery have had lots of fun preparing for Easter. We have made Easter cards, finger puppets, rabbit masks and baskets, and have cooked Easter cakes and rabbit shaped bread.   • Early Morning Table Tennis

    Pupils participated in their first ever early morning Table Tennis Club on Tuesday. The club is being run by myself and Mr Simon Oyler who is currently working as the Welsh international Table Tennis coach.   • Junior Talent Show

    The finals of the Junior Talent Show took place on 24th March.  The competition began with year group auditions where a variety of entertaining acts were performed throughout the Juniors.   Two acts from each year group were then chosen to perform in the finals.  Here, pupils demonstrated their talents with well-rehearsed performances. …

  • Sixth Formers Travel to Wolverhampton for Western UK Final of Rotary Youth Speaks

    On Saturday 21 March, we made the long journey to Wolverhampton to compete in the Western UK Final of Rotary Youth Speaks.  Having already progressed through three stages of the competition, at which they were crowned Welsh winners, Ryan, Rebecca and Bethan joined three other teams from the West of the UK for a place in the coveted National Final.  …

  • Solar Eclipse

    Friday 20th March, saw pupils in the Junior School excitedly experience the Solar Eclipse.  Pupils were able to watch the live feed on the interactive whiteboards.  They were then taken to a safe area outside where they could not directly view the eclipse but could experience other changes such as the darker sky, the colder temperature and the eerie quiet due to the lack of birdsong. …

  • EPSCA Under 9s: St John’s Chess ‘Masters’ Help Glamorgan to the Final

    Congratulations to the Glamorgan Chess squad (which includes five St John’s players) which has qualified for the finals of the Under 9 Inter-Association Championship in Northampton on 25 April. At the qualifier for the south zone, held at The Dell, Chepstow, on Saturday 14 March, Glamorgan finished the three-round competition on 22.5 points and qualified for the finals.  …

    The Sixth Form Literature students were treated to a superb performance of ‘Hamlet’ at the New Theatre on Wednesday, 11th March. The production, which was produced by the Clwyd Theatre, was enthralling and extremely powerful.     R9 celebrated a wonderful Mother’s Day assembly towards the end of last term. The children all worked tremendously hard and performed a variety of items including a play about new inventions to help the busy mum, individual musical performances, poems, songs, prayers and promises to help out at home.   • R13 Historians Visit Raglan Castle

    On Tuesday 10th March pupils from R13 visited Raglan Castle in Monmouthshire as part of their study of the Civil War.  They were joined by Tom Hillard, a local historian, who demonstrated a range of Civil War weapons and taught the pupils how to march.  In addition he brought along some musical instruments and taught us some dance! …

  • R10 Visit from PC Nigel Pope

    On 5 March, PC Pope involved the children in a lively discussion about what anti-social behaviour involves and the pupils were able to give many examples. Next they viewed three short videos where two incidents, in a park and a nearby street, were seen through the eyes of different people. Pupils answered questions about the videos enthusiastically and this led pupils to think about the consequences of the people’s actions.…

    On 5th March R9 enjoyed a fun day out at Cog Moors Water Works. In the morning they attended a session on water efficiency and learnt about the different jobs that the water works does for us so that we receive clean water. It was very educational.     On Wednesday 4 March, our boy and girl choristers attended the annual Choir Schools Association Sports and Evensong Day, this year generously hosted by Hereford Cathedral.   In the Netball Tournament, our girl choristers battled valiantly to come third, while in the hotly contested Football Tournament, our boy choristers were crowned overall winners, seeing off competition from the Cathedrals of Bristol, Exeter, Gloucester, Hereford, Llandaff, Truro, Wells, Winchester and Tewkesbury Abbey.…
