    Congratulations to team Mostyn for coming out on top in this half term’s closely fought Book Club quiz. Twist of Gold, written by Michael Morpurgo, set against the backdrop of the Irish famine, was very well received by all.   • Kids’ Lit Quiz

    On 22nd November two teams from St John’s College took part in the International Kids’ Lit Quiz to test their knowledge on children’s literature.  The children who took part were: Carys R, Ansha K, Crina C, Ji-Eun K, Lewis W, Chukwaka I, Katie W and Harshita A.  Both teams did very well, winning books for individual rounds.…

    Congratulations to Doris (U6), Angela (U6), Jack (L6) and Rachel (L6). These four Further Maths pupils competed in this year’s Regional Finals of the Senior Team Maths Challenge at Cardiff University on 24 November, and won the third place. They all worked very hard and did their best. Most of all the event was very enjoyable, though very challenging.…

    Many congratulations to the following pupils on achieving third place in the Year 11 Maths Pop Quiz Challenge at the University of South Wales.  The team members were Alif, Charles, Rowan, Aron and Daniel.  Competition was of a very high standard and very close.     On Monday 21st November, R10 headed to At-Bristol. Our morning passed quickly investigating the many hands on exhibits and the amazing 3D planetarium where we discovered lots of facts about our Solar System.   • Ella Wins Trampolining Gold for a Second Consecutive Year

    Ella E competed for St John’s College today at the Welsh Schools Trampolining Competition, held in Cardiff. She retained her gold medal and is again the Welsh champion in the Under 14 intermediate category for the second year running.   • New Design & Technology Workshop

    Sixth Form Design Technology students have enjoyed using the new workshop making wooden boxes using a range of hand tools and new machinery. The students have been taught about the properties of hardwoods and the range of skills required to make an ornamental wooden box. The students selected their material from a range of hardwoods supplied by Mr Roberts and included beech, oak, plane, ash, sycamore and sweet chestnut.…

    The R12 and R13 Rugby teams were treated to an excellent day out at the Principality Stadium this morning. This was thanks to our unique relationship with the Welsh Rugby Union through our sixth form pupil Jo P., who is a member of the WRU Youth Board.   • Children in Need

    Today our whole school worked together to raise money for Children in Need. The Infants wore their ‘Silly Socks’ and the Juniors and Seniors wore spotty socks and Pudsey ears alongside our usual money raising cake sale. The cake sale was again a sign of the generosity of our pupils, parents and staff, with every table covered with cakes to sell at morning break.…

  • L6 DNA Photocopying Workshop at Techniquest

    AS Biology students attended a half day workshop in the laboratories at Techniquest on Thurs 17th November, accompanied by Mrs L Thomas and Mrs Gordon-Smith. They had to extract their own mitochondrial DNA from cheek cells – not painful at all! As this DNA is maternal, there is no danger of these samples ever being used as a DNA profile.…

    On Monday, 14th November, R7 pupils visited the War Memorial in St Mellons. They looked at the wreaths from  Remembrance Sunday and listened to readings and prayers. Earlier in the week the pupils had made giant poppies in class which they took to the Memorial and which are now hanging in the Infant Playground.…

    On Friday 11 November, the whole school gathered for our annual Remembrance Day Assembly, in which prayers, poems and music were offered to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom and to remember recently departed members of the school community. The assembly was set in the context of the Catholic Year of Mercy, with reflection on the Welsh Assembly Centenary Lecture attended by our sixth formers, which described the remarkable story of the Christmas truce of 1914.…

    On Tuesday 8 November, our sixth formers attended the Welsh Assembly’s centenary lecture to commemorate the First World War, hosted at The Pierhead. This year’s lecture was offered by former British Army field commander, the Lieutenant-General Jonathon Riley, and was entitled ‘The Royal Welch Fusiliers and the great Christmas truce, 1914 – 1915’.…

    On Sunday 6 November, the Cathedral, Choir and the Archbishop of Cardiff hosted a civic service for Councillor Monica Walsh, The Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff. It was a pleasure to welcome representatives from a number of local organisations including Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, the High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, the President of the Consular Association, the Secretary General of the Muslim Council for Wales, the Naval Regional Commander of Wales and Western England, the Lord Mayor’s Chaplain, representatives of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cancer Research Wales, and representatives of the Lord Mayor’s Council. …

  • Senior Maths Challenge Results 2016

    On Tuesday 5th November 2016, 55 of our sixth form maths students participated in this years SMC exam. Steven (U6) did extremely well and scored 125 (full marks) by answering all the 25 questions correctly; 9 pupils scored at least 100. 14 pupils achieved gold certificate, 9 Silver and 12 Bronze while 13 pupils have qualified to do the Senior Kangaroo Exam on 2 December.…

  • European Table Tennis Championships

    R11 had a fantastic enrichment opportunity this afternoon to be spectators at the European Table Tennis Championships held at Sophia Gardens. The pupils watched on as Wales beat Azerbaijan 3-0 in the opening game of the championship. The pupils also got to witness Norway, Ireland and Iceland play competitive fixtures. After the game, pupils were able to meet and chat to all the players and even took the opportunity to get some autographs.…
