    Today R5 had a lesson in road safety. The children learnt to ‘Stop, Look, Listen and Think’. R5 used the zebra crossing and took turns to be the drivers. We are going for a walk tomorrow to practise our skills.…

    The Fox and the Ghost King Junior Book Club Michael Morpurgo’s tale of ghostly royalty, unlikely sporting victories and football frenzied foxes chasing an impossible dream, proved a real hit with our younger Book Club members. It was anybody’s game, with very little separating the three teams at the top of the table, however, St David’s 1 snatched victory in our closest ever Book Club, coming top of the league!…

  • A Level Spanish Trip to Valencia

    From the 15th-18th March, three students taking Spanish for A level, accompanied by Ms Adnany and Mr Dennis, embarked on their trip to Spain to join in the celebrations of ‘Las Fallas,’ a traditional festival celebrated every year since the 18th century. Not only was the festival a great opportunity for the pupils to practise their speaking skills, ‘Las Fallas’ is studied under the culture category on the A level specification.…

    Leon S, Jacob V and Jack A competed in the public speaking District final of the Youth Speaks competition on Saturday, 16th March in King Henry VIII School, Abergavenny. There was stiff competition from several schools across South Wales. Unfortunately, we walked away empty-handed this time, but the boys were fantastic in their delivery of whether we should explore our oceans instead of space.…

In the round robin, they beat Hereford Cathedral School but were then beaten by Monmouth Boys School so they didn’t progress to the semi-finals.     On World Book Day R11T read fairytales storybooks to the R8P pupils which they had written themselves, using the computers, in their English lessons before half term. The R11 pupils had worked incredibly hard on their stories using Google Slides to present them in an eye-catching way for younger pupils. It was lovely to watch the R11 pupils interact so well with R8 who thoroughly enjoyed each story.…

    The nursery children have had a busy first week back. We took part in the Eisteddfod where we painted a picture of a daffodil and made a creative dragon. We also sang a Welsh song. On Pancake Day we all made pancakes and chose a topping. During our PE lessons this week we have been working on our tennis skills and in Forest School, we have begun planting spring flowers in Mrs Brown’s garden patch.…

    Junior School pupils and staff all enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters on World Book Day. Pupils took on unusual reading star challenges and achieved a very good number, including “read to your pet”, “read aloud in a funny voice” and “put down your tablet and read instead!” Some classes produced attractive bunting displaying their drawings of favourite characters and books, while in lessons on the day a bumper quiz also proved popular.…

    Llongyfarchiadau mawr i Bute! Congratulations to Bute, the winning house of the St John’s College Junior Eisteddfod 2019. A great day full of music, dance and recitation.   • ESU Churchill Public Speaking Welsh final

    Kimaya M, Jacob V and Jack A (all R16) represented St John’s yesterday in the Welsh final of the ESU Churchill competition. The opposition was impressive from five other schools across Wales who aired their opinions on several challenging topics, such as: ‘we should reaffirm our moral and legal duties towards refugees’ and ‘the UK is a nation divided’.

  • Success at the F1 in Schools Regional Finals

    On Tuesday 19th February three of St John’s F1 teams attended the Regional Finals at Cardiff City Stadium. Our Entry Class Team were the winners of our in-house competition, Team BLACKOUT, alongside our accomplished Development Class team, INFINITY RACING, and our Professional team, THE EXCEPTION. Each team had worked incredibly hard in the run-up to the competition, using every break, lunch and after school to work on their pit display, folios and verbal presentation.…

  • Junior School Open Afternoon

    On Thursday, 14th February we welcomed our parents into the Junior School. The R11 Prefects and Librarians took groups of parents on a tour around the Junior classrooms where their peers, from R8 to R11, demonstrated their subject knowledge and skills across a variety of curriculum subjects. We had pupils dramatizing the three witches from Macbeth in English; Science experiments demonstrating reversible and irreversible; pupils teaching parents long multiplication and long division in Mathematics; Geography Q and A on an interactive whiteboard; World War II rations in History; various apps on modelled in ICT; various creative techniques in Art linked to their studies of the Romans and Urdd activities in Welsh.…
