The Role
St John's College is a leading independent school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. With 550 pupils on its roll,
St John’s is the Choir School to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral and seeks to appoint, for September 2020,
an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher of Science to continue to deliver and build upon the strong
academic profile that our Science department has become renowned for.
The successful candidate will specialise in any of the three sciences, however, applications from those with
a background in Physics are highly desired. NQTs are also welcome to apply. We warmly welcome
applications from all faiths who wish to work in our community and are willing to support the school’s
Catholic ethos.
The candidate must have a desire to contribute excellent resources and innovative approaches at key

The Role

St John's College is a leading independent school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. With 550 pupils on its roll, St John’s is the Choir School to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral and seeks to directly appoint or engage the services of, an enthusiastic chess tutor to deliver chess lessons to our Advanced Level Pupils (all ages.)

Chess is a popular co-curricular choice for our pupils and we are proud to be the only registered centre for the IoC (Institute of Chess) in Wales.

Our pupils are regularly entered for IoC examinations and take part in both individual and team interschool competitions, and in the Delancey chess challenge. The successful tutor will nurture talent and encourage and enter pupils into competitions at the Welsh Chess Union (WCU), the English Chess Foundation (ECF) and other further afield chess competitions. They will also have close links with the WCU (Welsh Chess Union), experience at teaching advanced level chess to pupils of all ages, have a minimum published ELO rating of 1,700, and have experience in organising inter-schools competitions. Arbiter experience and practical experience at experience using ‘Swiss Manager’ software is advantageous but not essential.

The Role

St John's College is a leading independent school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. With 550 pupils on its roll, St John’s is the Choir School to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral and seeks to directly appoint or engage the services of, an enthusiastic chess tutor to deliver chess classes to our Early Years Pupils (aged 5-7.)

Chess is a popular co-curricular choice for our pupils and we are proud to be the only registered centre for IoC (Institute of Chess) in South Wales. Advanced learners can be entered for IoC examinations.

The successful tutor will have a good playing strength (around 1200 ELO, or greater) and will teach pupils the basics of playing chess, ideally using the CSC (Chess in Schools and Colleges) teaching strategy. They will have close links with the WCU (Welsh Chess Union) and will have previous experience of teaching younger pupils, and organising competitions both in and out of school. Arbiter experience and practical experience using ‘Swiss Manager’ software is advantageous, but not essential.
