R11 Reading Group
R11 Reading Group encourages our keenest and most committed readers to explore challenging and thought-provoking books and discuss them in-depth.
This time we looked at fear, insecurity and bereavement in Beverly Naidoo’s hard-hitting Carnegie medal winner, The Other Side of Truth.
The children were utterly convinced by the portrait of 13-year-old Sade, forced to flee her comfortable life in Nigeria after a government coup places their campaigning journalist father and his family in danger. London represents limited safety for Sade and her younger brother, alone and unable to reveal their identity for fear of repercussions, they are forced to rely on complete strangers and Government agencies in an alien and foreign place.
Once again, we were thoroughly impressed (and challenged!) by the children’s questions and were delighted by their insight, depth of thought and political concerns.
For our final meeting of the year, we will be looking at ‘Mike’, the most recent novel from confirmed SJC favourite, Andrew Norriss.
