Junior Book Club

The theme of our most recent Book Club was ‘Adventure’ and it was brilliant to see our children competing with their customary enthusiasm and impressive knowledge once again, particularly as due to National Lockdowns this was our first Book Club competition since December!

R8 and R9 loved the beautifully illustrated Kitty and the Moonlight Rescue by Paula Harrison; where through daring, friendship and self-belief our hero discovers she really is a superhero after all.

R10 and R11 were thrilled by Katherine Rundells’ lifelike tale of survival, ‘The Explorer’, where four children are stranded, lost and alone in the Amazon rainforest – and must then find a way back to civilization.

Both competitions were impossibly close, yet in each St Davids proved to be our most able adventurers in both quizzes on this occasion, adeptly advancing to the top – well done all!

Next Book Club

Our next Book Club (and the last of the year) is themed around ‘Mystery’. Pupils can choose between:

Malamander  by Thomas Taylor (aimed at more confident readers)

Or

Precious and the Monkeys  by Alexander McCall Smith (suitable for all)

The ‘Precious’ series features a very young Precious Ramotswe from the author’s hugely popular ‘Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency’ books solving her very first cases. They have been described as ‘a delight’, by The Times and ‘delightful and enchanting’, by Julia Eccleshare from https://www.lovereading4kids. co.uk . This is her very first mystery to solve.

Malamander is a fast-paced and witty adventure (with a touch of magic and a real sense of danger) set in a creepy out of season seaside town. Described by Common Sense Media as ‘this delightfully spooky fantasy series opener […] drips with charm and chills, thanks to sprinklings of magic, humour, and mystery along with a dash of steampunk.’

The next Junior Book Club will be held on Monday 5th July. As always, those who have read the text, had it read to them or have listened to the audiobook are welcome to attend.

Happy reading,

Mr R Dennis
