    The two day, five round, Chess Swiss Tournament running on Thursday and Friday of half-term was a very successful event with 18 participants. The prizes were split into two groups – Over 11 and Under 12 boys and girls.  The results have been submitted to the live rating centre, www.liveratingcentre.com, where pupils can see their chess rating performance.…

    The Senior and Sixth Form Choral Scholars have just returned from a most enjoyable tour to Madrid and El Escorial. Particular highlights were a superb concert at Iglesia de San Manuel y San Benito (with two standing ovations), visits to Prado Art Gallery, Parque Retiro, and Real Madrid’s Bernabéu Stadium, and performances at Madrid Cathedral and the world-famous El Escorial. …

    Many congratulations to Hiya R and Ethan C of R7 who were two of only five Welsh Juniors to compete in the Terafinal and Challengers competitions in August.  Hiya and Ethan picked up several points and gained very valuable experience.  They should be particularly applauded for their courage in participating in such a tough competition alongside other players up to age 18, including several with very high ratings.…

  • R8 Trip to the National Museum of Wales

    R8 pupils visited Cardiff Museum to find out about the evolution of Wales and to look at the paintings in the art gallery. Pupils enjoyed finding out about volcanoes and the creation of the Welsh landscape. In the art gallery, the pupils were very privileged to meet the mouth artist Rosaleen Moriarty-Simmonds who is a member of The Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists.…

  • Tennis Team Reaches South West Regional Finals

    Many congratulations to the St John’s College Senior Boys’ Tennis Team which has reached the last 16 of the South West Regional Finals. Earlier this term they won the Welsh section of the competition and are now competing with teams across the South West of England. Yesterday, they travelled to Gloucester and beat St Peter’s Roman Catholic School.…

  • Middle School Summer Reading Challenge 2014

    Congratulations to all R12 and R13 pupils who participated in the St John’s Summer Reading Challenge. There was an impressive range of literature read and those who took part exceeded the minimum requirement of books. The top three winners were: Harry J (R13) in third place, who read 14 books; Jacob V (R12) in second place, reading an impressive 16 books; but in first place was last year’s Reading Challenge Champion, Holly Jones (R13), who read a staggering 28 books over the summer!…

  • R15 Biology Trip to the National Botanic Garden of Wales

    R15 enjoyed an educational visit to the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Carmarthenshire. The aim of the visit was to collect data from natural sources of pollution in the area. The pupils used natural indicators such as lichen and pond species to determine the air and water quality. Pupils found many varied species in the ponds such as Bloodworms, Caddis Fly larvae and Pond Skaters They also became experts on crusty, shrubby and leafy lichen as air pollution indicators.…

  • Middle School Enterprise Activities

    In the Autumn term at St John’s College, enterprise activities are held for R12-14 with the view to developing communicating, creativity, problem-solving and team-working skills for the future. These skills are essential in any profession.  Developing these skills at a young age is key. R12 pupils this year had to demonstrate creativity and the ability to work as a team to design outfits out of raw materials such as newspaper and card, which were then presented by the team and judged by our very own teachers.…
