On Friday 23rd January, our A Level Welsh students enjoyed a valuable and inspiring revision day at Cardiff University’s School of Welsh.
On arrival, students were warmly welcomed by university staff before taking part in a wide range of lectures and workshops, all carefully tailored to the WJEC AS and A Level specifications. Throughout the day, students were given the opportunity to deepen their subject knowledge whilst developing their skills outside the classroom.
All students began the day by taking part in an interactive grammar workshop designed to challenge and reinforce their linguistic skills, before our Lower Sixth students contributed valuably to a poetry workshop, analysing and discussing poems that may feature in the summer examination. Meanwhile, Upper Sixth students attended an engaging workshop on the A Level drama text ‘Crash’, an experience that will be particularly beneficial in preparation for their final speaking examinations later in the year.
Lower Sixth students then went on to explore the historical background of the Welsh settlers who arrived in Patagonia during the mid-nineteenth century. Students then revisited the film ‘Patagonia’, which forms part of their Lower Sixth studies, helping to consolidate their understanding of key themes and contexts. Whilst our Lower Sixth students were revising their set film, our Upper Sixth students attended a lecture on the short stories studied as part of the A Level course, where they were able to share their opinions with other students from across South Wales.
The day proved to be an excellent experience for all students, allowing them to not only revise key elements of the course and to experience the Welsh language outside the classroom, but to also gain a real insight into undergraduate life at Cardiff University.
Mrs George and Miss Prosser were very proud teachers indeed, especially when the efforts of our St John’s College students were highlighted by lecturers for happily sharing their accurate use of Welsh, and their sophisticated and mature ideas.
Diolch yn fawr i Ysgol y Gymraeg ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd am drefnu diwrnod addysgiadol ac ysbrydoledig unwaith eto!
Mrs George
