School was bursting with ‘cymreictod’ (Welshness) on Wednesday 15th October as we celebrated Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae Day, a special occasion that encourages everyone to start conversations in Welsh and show pride in our language and culture.

From the youngest learners to our sixth form students, the whole school came together to mark the day in a variety of ways. Our older pupils took the opportunity to share why they’ve chosen to continue studying Welsh at GCSE and A Level. Mrs George was very impressed with their heartwarming reasons which ranged from pride in their heritage, to the doors it opens for future careers and when applying to university. It reminded us all of the value of the Welsh language, not only in the classroom, but in everyday life. If you’d like to read more about why our pupils decided to study Welsh for GCSE and A Level, take a look at the ‘Languages’ story highlight on our official @SJCCardiff Instagram page.

Meanwhile, our younger pupils became imaginative, designing logos to represent the Welsh language in modern and meaningful ways, and listening to stories about Tanwen, the dragon!

Some of our R12 pupils took on the very important roles of ‘secret spies’, but not before listening to contemporary Welsh language music in their form rooms to get them going! As ‘secret spies’, they kept a close ear out across the school to identify which teacher used the most Welsh during the day. Congratulations to Mr Braithwaite, Miss Emanuel-Trinca and Madame Rezgui for their efforts, and coming in first, second and third places respectively!

A huge, final thank you goes to Laiba and Raheema, two of our dedicated A Level Welsh students, who organised a fantastic Welsh house quiz for our R12 and R13 pupils at lunchtime. Their planning and effort were clearly evident; the room was full, the atmosphere buzzing, and after some fierce (but friendly!) competition, Mostyn came out on top as the winning house!

It was a great day full of language, laughter, and Welsh pride; diolch yn fawr to everyone who took part and helped to make the day such a success!
