On 30th September, our A Level Welsh students were treated to a night at the theatre with Mrs George and Miss Prosser, as they enjoyed a Welsh adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ The bilingual performance of ‘Romeo a Juliet’, produced and directed by Theatr Cymru, Wales’s national theatre production company at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff, offered a fresh and thought-provoking take on one of literature’s most famous love stories.
The production cleverly incorporated contemporary Welsh culture and language into the narrative, making it not only accessible, but relevant to young people today.
Students were impressed with the powerful performances from some prominent actors in Welsh language television, the impressive staging, and even the use of pyrotechnics and water on stage!
However, the most notable part of the night for the students was their recognition that the Welsh language really is booming in their very own city! The entire evening helped to strengthen their appreciation for the richness and versatility of the Welsh language.
The evening was also a chance for students to engage with Welsh language arts in general - an important part of their A Level curriculum, as they begin to form comparisons with the literature studied at A Level along with wider reading outside the course.
The students’ behaviour was impeccable throughout, and they have been commended for representing St John’s College perfectly. Here’s to our next night at the theatre! Da iawn, bawb!
