Last week R11 went to Cardiff Castle as part of their studies of World War 2. They were greeted by Mark, an ARP warden who marched them off to safety from potential air raids! Mark gave a very detailed and lively presentation about life during WW2 and pupils were surprised by many aspects, including the gas masks (especially the one for babies!), and the sound of an air raid rattle shocked everyone! Everyone came away much better informed about how children had to cope in those difficult times. After lunch, they headed to the public air raid shelters in the tunnels round part of the castle grounds. They listened to a talk, heard the announcement of war on the radio broadcast and experienced walking through the darkness of the dimly lit tunnels to the sound of an air raid. Pupils were interested to see all the propaganda posters displayed on the walls and tried to work out their meanings and relevance.
After a brief visit to the castle museum, where pupils observed displays, costumes and medals from wartime, they headed back to school.
