R10 recently enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to Big Pit National Coal Museum as part of their history topic, taking part in a fascinating workshop titled ‘Servants of the Empire’.
During the workshop, pupils explored how coal mining played a vital role in powering the British Empire and shaping the lives of communities across South Wales. They learned about the men, women, and children who worked in the industry, discovering the challenges they faced and the pride they took in their work.
After lunch, pupils were kitted out with helmets and lamps before being accompanied underground by experienced mining staff. The tour gave everyone a real sense of the tough conditions and daily routines miners once endured. Walking through the tunnels, guided by those who had worked in the mines themselves, made the experience truly unforgettable.
