On Friday 26th September, pupils from St John’s College celebrated the annual European Day of Languages. The day, celebrated each September, was created to celebrate the rich variety of languages spoken across Europe and to inspire more people to take up learning a new language. It’s also a chance to appreciate the incredible diversity of the 6,000+ languages spoken worldwide, and to enjoy the excitement of multilingualism!
The theme for the celebrations this year was: Languages open hearts and minds.
To celebrate, the Heads of House and Languages Departments encouraged all pupils across the Junior and Senior Schools to enter the international European Day of Languages competition launched by the Global School Alliance
As part of the competition, pupils were asked to explore and express in their own words how languages open hearts and minds, both their own and those of others. They were asked to consider how languages make them feel and how they connect people across cultures, as well as the knowledge, skills and future opportunities languages provide.
The entries received by all participants were of an excellent standard and demonstrated the value pupils put into their language learning. Diolch, gracias & merci to all! Enjoy the pictures of some of our top entries below.
