Educational Visit R8

On Monday, 8th June, Class R8 ventured into the Brecon Beacons for an educational field trip. Our journey began at Dinas Rock, where we were greeted by brilliant sunshine. The group followed the river Pwll y Berw, discovering the roaring Dinas Rock waterfall, which was particularly dramatic due to recent rainfall. The students explored the historical significance of the area, learning about its past as a hub for limestone and silica mining, and even spotting remnants of old quarry drams and tramways embedded in the rock.

After lunch at the visitor centre, where the students enjoyed some well-deserved free play, we took in the vast, mountainous landscape. A key highlight was learning about the local agriculture; we discussed why sheep in the Beacons feature unique colour markings—a way for farmers to identify their flocks as they graze together. The journey continued with a drive past the scenic Cronfa’r Bannau (Beacons Reservoir), where we observed ongoing maintenance work.

Our expedition concluded at Pen y Fan. Surrounded by sheep and thistles, the students showed great determination, completing an 85-metre climb before heading back down to return to school. It was a thoroughly successful and memorable day of exploration.
